„Innovative Electric Motor with rare earths free permanent magnets for Light Electric Vehicles”

Electric motors for traction applications of electric vehicles have restrictive requirements regarding torque density and power density that needs to have the highest values, power that must be constant for a wide range of speeds and efficiency, which is the reason why electric motors with this destination are generally synchronous motors with permanent magnets based on rare earth elements. The context of the global dynamics regarding the exports of materials made from rare earths elements and the prices dynamics, can generate a shock wave that can affect the companies whose production is based for example on the import of magnets made from rare earths elements. The project idea was generated by the market, which practically impose to companies, due to the current technological advances, the development of more compact electric traction systems, with high power density and high efficiency and, preferably, not to use in their component materials elements considered rare as rare earths elements. The project proposal aim is to develop and to put into production of a new, innovative series of synchronous motors with variable reluctance assisted by ferrite permanent magnets for light electric vehicles (Emlev). The innovative solution proposed will lead to a reliable product, with an efficiency of over 95%, achieved by correlating elements such geometry optimization of the rotor, rectangular section of the winding coils, optimized electric drive. As a result of the project, significant technological and economic effects will result and ICPE in this way will expand its research capability and will diversify its range of products adapted to the new performance and efficiency requirements, assimilating the R&D results of the UPB and UTCN project partners.

The project objective is the realization of the prototype corresponding to the representative type size of the innovative series of electric motors, synchronous motors with variable reluctance assisted by permanent ferrite magnets for light electric vehicles, series that will cover three power variants (5kW, 7,5 kW and 10kW respectively), testing and validation in real operating conditions.

EMLEV is a project funded by UEFISCDI through the program P2 – Increasing the competitiveness of the Romanian economy through CDI, the sub-program Transfer to the economic operator. The project runs from 10 September 2020 to 09 September 2022 (24 mounths).
