Testele de laborator au fost efectuate folosind un electrolizor conectat la un sistem de conversie a energiei fotovoltaice. Consumul crescut de energie la nivel global poate fi asigurat folosind surse de energie regenerabil\u0103. Reducerea emisiilor de CO2 poate fi realizat\u0103 prin reducerea dependen\u021bei de combustibilii fosili. Pe baza datelor statistice \u0219i a modelelor predictive, energia solar\u0103 este una dintre cele mai importante resurse regenerabile de energie care are poten\u021bialul de a r\u0103spunde tuturor nevoilor de energie corelate cu tendin\u021bele actuale aflate \u00een cre\u0219tere. Pentru a genera 20 TW de energie de la soare este necesar s\u0103 acoperi\u021bi o suprafa\u021b\u0103 de 816.000 km2 cu module PV (Gratzel, M, 2011, Lewis 2006). Natura intermitent\u0103 a energiei solare poate crea dificult\u0103\u021bi pentru operatorii de re\u021bea, iar energia convertit\u0103 ar trebuie stocat\u0103 \u00een sisteme de stocare dedicate, ceea ce va cre\u0219te \u00een final pre\u021bul energiei electrice. O modalitate de a rezolva aceste probleme este \u00eenlocuirea combustibililor fosili cu hidrogenul. Cea mai important\u0103 surs\u0103 de hidrogen este apa, o resurs\u0103 convenabil\u0103 \u0219i abundent\u0103. Dac\u0103 consumul mondial de energie se va baza pe energia stocat\u0103 \u00een hidrogen, aceasta poate fi asigurat\u0103 din aproximativ 3,5 x 1013 litri de ap\u0103.
