ADVANCED MANUFACTURING OF A FLYWHEEL FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE REACTION WHEEL
The main technical objective of the project is to design, manufacture (by additive manufacturing) and to validate by tests a new flywheel which will be used in a reaction wheel suitable for small Science and Earth observation missions.
The new flywheel proposed a competitive design and competitive manufacturing method which enhanced the flywheel performances, such as: lightweight design (optimized complex structures with different structural density), increased strength (complex design structure with high rigidity) and improved functionality (design and manufacturing multiple parts as a single unit).
The new flywheel was manufactured by SLM Additive Manufacturing and currently is under testing and validation of the functional and performance requirements.
